Case study: AllStar Logo

Custom apparel customers design right on the product page

AllStar Logo's old product designer was slow to load and froze while customers were designing, which cost the store a lot of customers. The site ran on PHP 7.3, so it could not even be updated.

In short

AllStar Logo, an Inglewood, California apparel company in business since 1991, sells embroidered and printed corporate apparel online. Its old product designer, eFoli, was slow to load and froze while customers were designing, and the site ran on PHP 7.3, so it could not be updated. Codiffy upgraded the site to PHP 8.5, updated WordPress, the theme and every plugin, replaced the designer with Codiffy Canvas, converted all saved eFoli designs into Canvas designs and optimized the speed of the whole website, which now has a 100 % page speed score.

About AllStar Logo

AllStar Logo opened in Inglewood, California in 1991 and has sold online since 2001. It decorates work uniforms, polo shirts, jackets, caps, aprons, towels and fleece blankets with embroidery, screen printing and direct-to-garment printing, on brands such as Nike, The North Face, Carhartt and Adidas. Most customers are businesses ordering for their people: uniforms for staff, shirts for a trade show, blankets as client gifts.

On a store like this, the product designer is the shop counter. A customer who cannot see their logo on the garment, in their color and at their quantity, either picks up the phone or leaves.

The problem

For years, designs on allstarlogo.com were made in eFoli, a third-party designer that lived on its own /design-studio/ page. By the time AllStar Logo came to us, it was the part of the site that held everything else back:

  • It was too slow to load. Every garment color was a full-size PNG of about 800 KB, some 58 MB of pictures for a single product, and customers waited for the designer before they could even start.
  • It got stuck in the middle of a design. The designer would freeze all of a sudden while customers were designing, and AllStar Logo lost a lot of customers because of it.
  • The website was stuck on PHP 7.3. Because of the old PHP version, the site could not even be updated: WordPress, the theme and the plugins all stayed behind.
  • It sat on a separate page. The product page only offered a button, and customers had to leave it to design and then find their way back to order.
  • It clashed with optimization. Page optimization tools broke it, so the pages it lived on had to be kept away from them.
  • Other features depended on it. The theme read the designer’s database tables directly for the color swatches and the Buy Sample feature, while quantity discounts and saved carts came from two more plugins.

What we did

  • Upgraded PHP from 7.3 to 8.5 The foundation the rest of the work needed.
  • Updated the whole site WordPress core, the theme and every plugin, once the PHP upgrade made that possible.
  • Replaced the old designer with Codiffy Canvas Our own product designer, which loads fast and does not freeze on customers.
  • Converted every saved eFoli design All of the old saved designs became Codiffy Canvas designs, so customers kept their existing designs.
  • Optimized the page speed of the whole website A full page speed optimization, across every page of the site.

Codiffy Canvas: the product designer

Codiffy Canvas is a product customizer for WooCommerce that Codiffy designed and built for AllStar Logo. It puts the whole design-and-order flow on the product page itself, replaces the old designer, and brings quantity discounts, saved carts, Buy Blank and Buy Sample into one plugin.

Step 1 on a live product page: picking Burgundy switches the photo at once. Step 2, Start Designing, opens the designer on the same page.

How it works for customers

  1. Choose a color. Swatches on the product page switch the product photo instantly.
  2. Start designing. The designer opens right below, on the same page. It only loads when the customer asks for it, so the product page stays light.
  3. Design it. Upload a logo in any of 13 file types, including AI, PDF, PSD, EPS, SVG and PNG, with background removal and logo recoloring; add clip art from a built-in library of 178 graphics in 14 categories; or add text with outline, curve, rotation and letter spacing. Front, back and side views, zoom, and a print area that every element stays inside.
  4. Sizes and quantities. One size grid per garment color. All sizes and colors count toward the price break, and the price box shows the total, the one-time setup fees and how many more pieces reach the next break.
  5. Add to cart. One click. The design, the customer’s original artwork files and a preview travel with the order.

Sizes and quantities in Codiffy Canvas: 12 Medium and 12 Large burgundy polos, 24 pieces at $36.99 each, two one-time setup fees and a note that 49 more pieces lower the price

What the store’s team gets

  • A settings panel on every product: sides and print areas drawn straight on the photo, colors from a shared color library, sizes and upcharges, minimums and setup fees.
  • Every button, text and color of the design flow editable in the admin, with no code.
  • Orders production can work from: one line per product, color and design, the customer’s original artwork, a readable design summary, and production files and ZIP downloads from the order screen.
  • Designs on invoices and packing slips, and designs customers can save, share and come back to from their account.

Moving 1,795 products, and every saved design

Both designers could run side by side, so products were switched to Canvas one at a time instead of in one risky night. A migration tool copies each product’s colors, photos, sides and print areas from the old designer’s data and creates light WebP copies of the product photos.

Past designs mattered as much as new ones, because repeat customers reorder what they designed before. We converted all of the old saved eFoli designs into Codiffy Canvas designs, so customers kept their existing designs: Buy Again, saved designs and saved carts all open in Canvas. Uploaded logos keep the customer’s original file, and plain text stays editable.

Built for speed

A product designer is the heaviest thing on a product page, so Canvas was built to cost almost nothing until a customer uses it. Measured on the staging copy of the store:

  • 58 MB → 2.5 MBof product photos per product, as WebP display copies
  • 205 → 59database queries to add a design to the cart
  • under 1 secondfrom the Add to Cart click to the cart’s answer (0.85 to 0.97 s)

On top of Canvas, we ran a full page speed optimization of the whole website. The result is a 100 % page speed score across the whole site.

Results

  • 100 %page speed score across the whole website after the speed optimization
  • PHP 8.5up from PHP 7.3, with WordPress, the theme and every plugin up to date
  • 1,795products designed right on their product page

Customers can now complete their designs without the designer getting stuck. Since September 29, 2026, every product that could be designed in the old designer is a Canvas product, every saved design opens in Canvas, and the site runs on PHP 8.5 and is fully up to date.

Questions about this project.

What is Codiffy Canvas?

A product customizer for WooCommerce built by Codiffy. Customers choose a color, add their logo, clip art or text on the product page, pick sizes and quantities, and add the design to the cart in one flow.

Why did AllStar Logo replace its old product designer?

It was too slow to load, and it froze all of a sudden while customers were in the middle of designing, which cost the store a lot of customers. Codiffy Canvas loads fast and does not freeze on customers.

How many products use Codiffy Canvas on allstarlogo.com?

All 1,795 products that could be designed in the old designer, since September 29, 2026.

Why could the site not be updated before?

It was running on PHP 7.3. Codiffy upgraded it to PHP 8.5, and then updated WordPress, the theme and every plugin.

Can customers reorder designs made in the old designer?

Yes, in most cases. Canvas rebuilds the old designs when a customer clicks Buy Again, opens a saved design or returns to a saved cart. Checked against 19,970 designed order lines from 2017 to 2026, about 97.5 % come back as Canvas designs; the rest still open through the old route.

Did customers lose the designs they made in the old designer?

No. All of the old saved eFoli designs were converted into Codiffy Canvas designs, so customers kept their existing designs and can reorder them.

How fast is the site now?

After the full page speed optimization, allstarlogo.com has a 100 % page speed score across the whole website.

Which file types can customers upload?

13 types: AI, PDF, PSD, EPS, TIFF, SVG, PNG, JPG, GIF, WebP, HEIC and HEIF, BMP and AVIF, with a real preview for the common formats.

Can I use Codiffy Canvas on my store?

Not right now. Codiffy Canvas is not for sale at the moment.
