Case study: Heritage Memorials Ltd

An unsupported WordPress site brought up to date in six days

The site ran on a PHP version so old that WordPress no longer offered updates for its core, theme or plugins.

In short

Heritage Memorials Ltd is a Canadian monument maker in Windsor, with custom granite memorials, laser etching, a catalogue, a carving search and a network of sales representatives. Its WordPress site ran on a PHP version too old for updates. In six days Codiffy made the theme and custom code work on PHP 8.2.29, updated the plugins, found no malware in a full scan and rebuilt the Carving Search page.

The short version

Challenge
The site ran on a PHP version so old that WordPress no longer offered updates for its core, theme or plugins.
Approach
We adjusted the theme and custom code for current PHP, upgraded PHP to 8.2.29, updated all plugins, scanned the whole site for malware and rebuilt the Carving Search card sections that broke on the new PHP version.
Result
Six days from introduction to completion report: a supported PHP version, updated plugins, a clean malware scan and a working Carving Search page.

About Heritage Memorials

Heritage Memorials Ltd is a Canadian monument maker in Windsor, with custom granite memorials, laser etching, a catalogue, a carving search and a network of sales representatives. We did not design its website; we brought it up to date.

The problem

The site ran on a PHP version so old that WordPress no longer offered updates for its core, theme or plugins. Before approving the work, the client asked whether the files would also be scanned for malware.

What we did

  • Why updates were blocked A review of the site and a plain explanation of what was holding the updates back.
  • PHP 8.2.29 The theme and custom code adjusted to run on a current PHP version, then PHP upgraded to 8.2.29 and all plugins updated.
  • A malware scan The whole site scanned. Nothing was found.
  • Carving Search rebuilt Its card sections relied on Easy Columns, an unsupported plugin that broke on the new PHP version, so we rebuilt them.
  • Tested The site checked, including the head office enquiry form. We also found why the Sales Agents map was not loading: the Google Maps key is not authorised for the domain and billing is not enabled on the Google account.

The result

Six days from introduction to completion report. The site now runs on a supported PHP version, with updated plugins, a clean malware scan and a working Carving Search page. More on our core, theme and plugin updates page.

Questions about this project.

Why could the site not be updated?

It ran on a PHP version so old that WordPress no longer offered updates for its core, theme or plugins.

What broke on the new PHP version, and how was it fixed?

The card sections on the Carving Search page used the Easy Columns plugin, which is no longer supported and broke on the new PHP version. We rebuilt those sections without it.

Malware removed and two sister tour company websites locked down

Challenge
In October 2023 visitors to the Snowy Owl Sled Dog Tours website started seeing spam pop-ups and redirects. The site also ran an outdated PHP version, an outdated theme and several unused plugins, and it had not been updated since it was built.
Result
The infection was removed and the way in closed within about two weeks of the first report. By 6 November 2023 both sites were fully updated and on PHP 8.2.

Speed work, a rebuild and a malware cleanup for a hair replacement studio

Challenge
In September 2021 the studio's home page scored 13 out of 100 on Google PageSpeed mobile. The site also needed more and better images: the before and after photos were very low resolution.
Result
Google PageSpeed mobile went from 13 to 97 in September 2021, the rebuilt site went live on 25 May 2023, about seven weeks after kickoff, and Guardian Shield Lite removed the fake Cloudflare malware.
